money smart week 2015

Money Smart Week® is a public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. It includes topics such as saving, using credit wisely, and financial education for youths. This is achieved through the collaboration and coordination effort of organizations across the country including businesses, financial institutions, schools, libraries, not-for-profits, government agencies and the media. These groups come together once a year to stress the importance of financial literacy, inform consumers about where they can get help and provide free educational seminars and activities throughout the week.  Created by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago in 2002, this year MSW celebration is April 18 - 25, 2015.

The Poplar Creek Public Main and Branch Libraries will be participating this year with financial displays and educational handouts.  We are also participating in the DASH for the STASH contest open from April 15-May 15.  For details and rules, go to http://www.iinvest.org/news/five-states-and-district-of-columbia-to-offer-1000-prizes-in-dash-for-the-stash-financial-literacy-push-in-libraries/

art appreciation 2015

On April 25, come out to the Poplar Creek Library (1405 South Park Avenue) for an art exhibit like no other! The Community Relations Commission promotes “Art Appreciation: Ethnic, American and Other Arts” and invites everyone to learn about our cultural heritages through art.

This event features displays of two- and three-dimensional art created by local artisans, and includes paintings, woodwork, jewelry and more, such as these pieces from past years. Artisans will also be present to discuss their work throughout the afternoon. The exhibit will be open from 1:00-4:00 pm.
